In order to deal with ongoing bullying and backlash violence, U.S. Sikhs have hired former Clinton strategist to rebrand the Sikh image.
The Sikhs were the most visible of the soldiers deployed in every arena of the war. Sikhs wore their turbans in conflict, although images of the conflict show non-Sikh cavalrymen wearing turbans in apparent combat, for the Sikhs it was a strict adherence and a sign of the pride in their faith.
This project aims to document the lives of these young Sikh men and women, who have kept and loved their identity and are trying to give a new lease of life to Turban in times of crisis.
"I told them, 'I'm sad that it took a tragedy of this magnitude for you to spotlight us in the community. But now that you're here, I want to make sure the information you're conveying to the public is accurate and meaningful. Maybe greater awareness can prevent another tragedy.'"
And it’s heartbreaking to watch juxtaposed sequences of Dastarbandi (turban tying ceremony) of a young boy and a young Sikh man getting a haircut, both for the first time in their lives.
Dr Harbans Singh Saron mentioned the importance of the Sikh value of "commitment to service" that goes beyond serving food. He said: "As we ring in the new year with Vaisakhi, there could not be a better way than to join our brethren at the Glide Church with the message of hope and love".
In the face of continued discrimination and hate crimes that largely go unreported by the media, many Sikhs remain strong and steadfast to their beliefs and traditions.
The turban is our Guru's gift to us. It is how we crown ourselves as the Singhs and Kaurs who sit on the throne of commitment to our own higher consciousness...
