Bani (Punjabi: ਬਾਣੀ), short for Gurbani (Punjabi: ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ), consists of two roots - Guroo and Baanee. The word "Guroo"  aka "Guru" means "spiritual teacher, "and here refers to the ten historical Gurus of the Sikh tradition who lived from 1469-1708.  The compositions of some of these Gurus, along with the compositions of other contemporary devotees from different faiths, can be found in the sacred Siri Guru Granth Sahib. The word "Baanee" aka "Bani" refers to the frequency of consciousness in which these songs were composed.  So the combined word "Gurbaanee" aka "Gurbani" refers to the divine frequency of wisdom that guides a person to Truth, as encapsulated in the compositions contained within the Sikh's sacred text - the Siri Guru Granth Sahib.
