In northern India in the 14th and 15th centuries, there was a strong anticaste sant tradition. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the Sikh Guru Nanak (1469–1539) and his followers turned this into an organised religious movement in Punjab.
On 14th June 2020, Guru Simran Kaur was honoured with the Clara Barton Award from the American Red Cross for her voluntary work during natural disasters and times of crisis.
The Sikh Federation UK (SFUK) celebrated the victory of its campaign to get a Sikh ethnic tick-box added to the 2021 UK census. The Scottish government agreed to include a Sikh prompt in the "other" section of the ethnicity response options.
