Fifth annual Festival of Faiths takes place in Cincinnati with a strong presence and participation from the Sikh community
The Annual Indiana-India Gala is fast emerging as a nationally recognized and internationally known Asian Indian-Hoosier event; it is a signature celebration of the Indiana India Business Council (IIBC). The IIBC is led by a very dedicated and visionary leader Dr. Raju Chinthala - Founder and President Dr. Raju Chinthala, and a distinguished Board of Directors, and supported by a number of Indiana and India leaders and several philanthropic friends from across a wide spectrum of cultural groups, business entrepreneurs, educational organizations, political leaders, and individual friends and benefactors.
She once explained to me, "A lot of times the elders try to get involved with how the gurdwara should be run and control everything. But actually, we elders are just supposed to be quiet. We just need to sit back, give blessings and tell stories".
Guru Nanak's noble ideals of universal fellowship, the welfare of all (Sarbat da bhala), compassion, Selfless Service (Seva), resource-sharing (Wand Chhakanaa) and its principles of social equality, justice, liberty, and fraternity place tremendous responsibility on all of us for addressing the problems of peaceful co-existence across the world. To achieve sustainable peace worldwide, we must strive to lead our lives according to these cherished ideals and principles.

We focused in our conversation on how there is a lack of Sikh representation, historically, at the Union - a place where minorities and diversity have not always been a central focus... A lot of members who attended the event had never heard of Sikhi (other than maybe from knowing I am a Sikh or by hearing of the term Sikh) and walked away feeling more educated, connected, and empathetic towards the Sikh community. It was quite special to see and deeply empowering, as well.
