This month I am greeting you directly from the celebrations in Batala, Panjab where the entire city is celebrating the Viah Gurpurab of Dhan Dhan Siri Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Mata Sulakhni Ji did not follow the usual Brahmin customs of the time while celebrating their wedding. Guru Nanak Dev Ji, even at a young age, was unburdened by superstitions and held a profound understanding of what truly mattered in a married life.

Withstanding many travels and separations their home remained a safe haven for saints, a place of peace and unity, demonstrating how the Khalsa family can flourish and grow in love and trust, a guiding example for all Sikh families to follow in the generations to come.

On this special occasion, we invite you to listen to this Katha 'The Marriage of Guru Nanak' by the respected Baba Jagjit Singh (Harkhowal), available for your enjoyment on SikhNet Play.

Despite living in a time when women were in a more subjugated role, even today, this marriage can be held as an example of how freedom and liberty of expression can allow people to fulfill themselves as individuals while fulfilling their familial roles.
