Read below how EcoSikh has made a difference:
What is EcoSikh?
EcoSikh was launched in 2009 as the Sikh response to a call by the United Nations to World Religions to save Earth's environment and respond to the challenge of climate change. Punjab is also facing an environmental disaster due to over usage of the land, water, pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Since 2009, EcoSikh has facilitated many projects in Punjab and around the world through its two staff members in India and one in Washington to engage the Sikh community on environmental issues.
We have three staff members, young professionals, who chose to become the messengers of Guru Nanak and Guru Har Rai and are working with the global Sikh community and especially in Punjab to change the course of direction for our people and for this planet.
The following is a partial list of our programs and initiatives:
March 14th as Sikh Environment Day (SED): EcoSikh launched SED in 2010. Thousands of Sikhs are celebrating March 14th as Sikh Environment day marking the Gurgaddi Diwas of Guru Har Rai Ji. In 2014, 2000 Sikh gurdwaras, educational institutions, schools and colleges have celebrated SED in a meaningful manner by taking green actions. This has been reported in the media all over the world and has certainly raised the profile of the Sikhs positively around the world.
Advocacy on Environmental issues: EcoSikh has lobbied the Punjab Government and has worked with the United Nations, The White House, SGPC, Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee, Hazur Sahib Gurdwara Management Board, Nanded and Waghala Municipal Committee and ICLEI, an international body working for sustainability of cities and hundreds of schools, colleges and institutions all across Punjab and India.
Amritsar joins the Green Pilgrimage Network: In 2011, EcoSikh facilitated SGPC and Punjab Government to represent Amritsar in Assisi, Italy, making the holy city a founding member of this prestigious Network. Many other faith cities are also its members.
Plastic and Pollution free Hola Mohalla Celebrations at Anandpur Sahib: EcoSikh urged Punjab Govt. SGPC and City's officials on this issue and this led to a strict implementation of ban on plastic bags below 30 microns in size in Punjab. We will continue to press upon on this issue.
Lobbying to have Anandpur Sahib declared as a Green City: As SGPC and Punjab government are making plans to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the city founded by Guru Tegh Bahadur ji, EcoSikh is advocating and it has been widely reported in the media that a special care should be given to preserve the natural beauty of this holy city as seen by the Gurus and Sikhs since last 300 hundred years. In addition, it is advocating organic farming and eco-tourism to bring sustainable development to the area.
Punjab Environment Summit hosted with industrialists, scientists, and educators in July 2012: EcoSikh has prompted Ludhiana industry and business leaders to take action voluntarily to stop the pollution of water that leads directly to waters of Punjab becoming deadly for land and humans.
Amritsar Foundation Day: After 400 hundreds years of its existence, this is the first time that citizens of this sacred city are taking action to preserve its ecology. This historical day, when Guru Ramdas ji laid the foundation of this spiritual city, was celebrated by EcoSikh with Amritsar's civic bodies and religious institutions this past year and this year too. Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims and Christians all joined. Hundreds took mass action towards saving water, increasing green cover and also caring for clean air. Various religious, governmental, and social events this day inspired citizens and visitors to care for the city's dwindling natural resources.
Nanded Joins International Network: Nanded and Hazoor Sahib join the Green Pilgrimage Network. Nanded, the city where Guru Granth Sahib was given the Gurgaddi, is now on the international map as a Green spot. City and Hazoor Sahib is planning a major launch early next year. Godavari, the main river which passes through the city and where all the major historical gurdwaras are situated, has become totally filled with raw sewage of the city. EcoSikh is working with city officials and international agencies to bring environmental projects to make the city sustainable.
Naulakha Baagh - A herbal garden, started by Guru Har Rai ji over 400 years ago in Kiratpur Sahib, was virtually non-existent. At EcoSikh's prompting, this glorious garden is now being restored to its full glory of a herbal medicinal garden. Much more plans are underway in Kiratpur Sahib.
Green Gurdwaras: Many gurdwaras across the world are now taking meaningful actions to becoming greener in their operations - including changes in lights, water usage, and switching to eco-friendly ways. EcoSikh's awareness campaign through literature and use of social media is inspiring many to become committed to this cause. Hundreds of youngsters are becoming "Eco-Warriors." A major Green Gurdwara plan is being launched later this year!
EcoSikh Norway Branch Launched: In 2013, Norwegian Sikhs launched an EcoSikh branch in Oslo to start their environmental work. They are engaging youth as well as other non-Sikh participants to join in environmental work. Just imagine how this will change how Sikhs are viewed?
Five Takhats Declare March 14th as Sikh Environment Day: In March 2013, all the five Takhats (first time in Sikh history) announced that Sikh Environment Day should be celebrated each year as a Sikh Religious Festival in honor of 7th Guru who is known to have deep sensitivity for nature and living beings. This was reported by press all over the world giving a positive image of the Sikhs globally.
School children, college youth and Granthi/Parcharaks training on Green Sikh Theology: Thousands of Sikh youth around the world are exposed to Sikh teachings on the environment via special celebrations and pledges on SED. This is the first time that this kind of massive training is taking place. In addition, EcoSikh has done granthi training on this subject in Punjab so our future preachers connect Sikhi to the problems facing humanity.
Engaging with the White House: The 5-year old initiative has recently been invited to join in critical discussions at the White House regarding the growing threat of Climate Change. EcoSikh is now being consulted to join in meetings and discussions on the national policy of President Obama on climate change.
Sikh Perspective on Climate Change: EcoSikh will be issuing a major statement as a Sikh perspective on climate change to bring Sikhs in the center stage of this global dialogue and challenge facing the entire humanity.
Sikh Perspective on Interfaith Summit on Climate Change in New York: EcoSikh will be part of the deliberations and meetings at the United Nations this fall. Religious leaders from all over the world to lobby heads of states gathering at the United Nations this September. Thousands of volunteers from various religions will be marching on Climate change and Sikhs will be part of it!
Sikh Youth Eco-leaders: A youth leaders network is being envisioned to train our young people to become leaders who would work for the betterment of future generations and Mother Earth! This fall will see a youth network come to fruition.
So far we have worked on a small budget with a grant by the Norwegian government and support by a few Sikh individuals who see this is as important and critical issue.
We need the Sikh community's - and especially your - supporting hand to make this vision a reality.
