Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh has asked the Sikh community to show due respect to all women, come forward to answer their distress calls and prevent them from being exploited.
He said this while taking a serious note of the last week’s incident involving a British woman’s mental harassment by Sukhwinder Singh, a turbaned (Sikh) Home Guards jawan on board a Delhi-bound train.
“It is a shameful act and needs to be condemned
by one and all. Such acts bring a bad name to the entire community”,
the Akal Takht jathedar said in a statement issued here on
Tuesday.
“Look
into your historical past when you see a woman being harassed. Don’t
be afraid while coming to her rescue and in restoring her honour”,
Gurbachan Singh appealed to the Sikh community.
“Sikhs have always come forward to help women in distress. There are so many instances in history that show how Sikhs sacrificed their lives to protect the honour and dignity of women,” Jathedar Gurbachan Singh said.
He
further said that a large number of women were rescued by the Sikhs
from the clutches of those who invaded India.
The Akal Takht jathedar also demanded “sternest possible” action against the Home Guards jawan, who has already been dismissed from service.
