t is heartening to see local governments be involved in addressing hate within their community by fostering more awareness and appreciation among its residents.
I realized that schools are the first institutions that must become a model of pluralism, in order for pluralism to seep out into the rest of society.
The purpose of the Diversity Video Competition is to promote understanding and encourage dialogue on civil rights issues, stereotypes, and myths surrounding minority groups (with a particular anchor in the Sikh experience).

As someone who practices religion personally and studies religion academically, this story tears me up inside. There's so much I want to say about this. A lot of it is probably obvious, and a lot has already been said. But I do think this story raises an important question that we tend to overlook.

Identities are not fixed in stone. What we imagine our communities to be must also evolve with the tides of history. As we think about pluralism, we should be open to the fact that there may be a variety of “best practices,” a “diversity of diversities,” and a “pluralism of pluralisms.”
The purpose of the Diversity Video Competition was to provide the public a space to engage in a dialogue on civil rights issues, stereotypes, and myths surrounding minority groups, including Sikhs. It is through this dialogue that the Coalition hopes to dissolve ignorance and spread awareness of discriminated minorities.
All entries must be received by September 15, 2010. No film experience is required to participate, and people of all ages are encouraged to submit.
We have become not a melting pot, with all the ingredients blended together, but a beautiful mosaic – each tile uniquely beautiful whilst also merging into the big picture which has a beauty all its own. Different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams.
