There seems to be no end to confusion within the Sikh community over observing days with religious importance despite adoption of Nanakshahi Calendar (NC) since 2003 to fix dates of Gurpurabs and other religious festivals...
Talking to the media, Purewal said the SGPC and the Akali leadership had done a heinous crime by intermingling Nanakshahi Calendar with Bikrami Calendar. “This is no amendment but total drift towards Bikrami Calendar,” he said, adding that the decision was arbitrary and the original version of the calendar, as adopted in 2003, should be restored.
Nanakshahi became the first Sikh calendar in 2003. It is named after Guru Nanak and begins on his birth year. It is based on the tropical solar year and is astronomically correct. Nanakshahi months and years are perfectly aligned with it. For Sikhs, Nanakshahi fixes all gurpurab dates, and the months and seasons will always match with Gurbani.
You now can easily add the current Gurpurb dates to your calendar and other major Sikh events that are celebrated by Sikhs.
The amendments to the Nanakshahi Calendar approved by the executive committee of the SGPC were formally announced by jathedar of Akal Takht on Monday, making these official and binding on every Sikh.
The Sikh clergy failed to reach any conclusion after the meeting as there was strong opposition from the Takht Damdamma Sahib Jathedar Giani Balwant Singh Nandgarh, against any change in the calendar.
