But the outward appearance of these artists – most clearly marked by the Sikh symbols of a turban and beard – doesn’t make being taken seriously as an artist particularly easy. “[It] definitely makes it difficult to fit in as a hip-hop artist,” says Mandeep Sethi, a San Francisco rapper. “But really, it only affects me as much as I let it.”
