Between 85,000 and 100,000 revellers lined Toronto’s streets on Sunday, marching to City Hall in tribute to the Sikh new year – outdone in numbers only by Surrey, B.C., where upwards of 200,000 people turned out – all to celebrate Khalsa Day.
About a thousand people turned out despite sporadic rain to celebrate Khalsa Day, pouring through the downtown core in a colourful parade. But the day was about more than celebrating 312 years since the official start of the concept of Khalsa.
The Sikh community celebrates the Khalsa festival to educate other Canadians about their faith and to ensure the culture is kept alive by new generations of Canadian-born Sikhs.
