The historic Stockton Gurdwara in California, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary, remains the spiritual home to generations of Sikh Americans in the country, a top US lawmaker has said.

The temple, at the far end of South Grant Street, also is home to thousands of Sikhs on the West Coast. For them, it represents an almost-mystical place deserving of pilgrimage, reverence and historical study.

Later the group strolled through the crowd around the grounds of the temple like a roving band of minstrels. It was then I noticed their instruments.

Stockton's annual Sikh festival and the four-mile parade to downtown are always a special event, but perhaps just a bit more so this year.

When Ajaypal Singh was 4, she memorized her first prayer. Eight years later, at the historic Sikh temple in south Stockton on Saturday, the Fremont girl recited 18 prayers from memory; it took half an hour.
