March 30, 2016: Guri Singh is the owner of gosikh.com , a website that is determined to give quality at affordable prices with the least damage to the environment possible. They carry items most Sikhs use such as turban cloth, kangha, kacchera, patkas, kurtis, etc. Recently, in an aim to avoid putting toxic chemical dyes into the water system, they have been experimenting in natural dyes made from katachen, ratanjot, henna, and marigold flowers, amongst other things. The marigold flowers produce a soft yellow that would be liked by many Sikhs, and the other available “gentle” colours are a brown, greyish-blue, pale mossy green, or a toned down brick-orange (henna).
Owner Guri Singh says: "All I care about is how can we reduce usage and reduce pollution that goes into making our Turbans. This year we plan to offer 5-7 turbans that are dyed with Natural products. We hope to double (that number) by 2017. Our goal is to (completely) stop selling turbans that are dyed with chemicals."
gosikh.com went live in 2006, and was originally a part time business adventure. Guri provides excellent caring customer service, and made a move to devote himself entirely to the site in 2013, giving up his day job. Some of the work is completed in India by family members, and some is done in the USA. They work tirelessly to compete in a cut-throat world where shipping costs are becoming debilitating, keeping positive about the future of the business. As more and more people in general are becoming interested in caring for their environment, the recent step towards natural dyes or unbleached cloth as well, is a welcome move that more people should consider taking advantage of.
