British MP John McDonnell recently started a petition to restore the teaching of Punjabi for British teenage students.
"In the last week of parliament, we discovered that as a result of the governments reforms to the educational qualifications at GCSE and A-level that a number of academic awarding bodies had actually dropped Punjabi as a subject to be examined at GCSE and A-level.
This is really shocking.
Many youngsters study Punjabi now and it's an essential way of passing on from one generation to another the Punjabi culture. In addition to that learning Punjabi is one of those modern skills that we need in a global economy.
I've launched a petition calling upon the incoming government to reverse this decision to make sure that education qualification awarding bodies offer Punjabi for examination at both GCSE and A-level. I am urging you to sign this petition, it's a nationwide petition, and I believe if we can collect enough signatures on the petition we can save Punjabi being taught at GCSE and A-level.
This is absolutely crucial for the Punjabi community in Britain."
