12 August 2014: It was a night of rewards, inspiration and admiration.
The first ever Kenyan Sikh Achievers Awards conceptualised and organised by Ramgarhia Youth Association took place on Saturday at the Sikh Temple Pangani.
The categories awarded included sports, media, music and dance.
The judges were a panel of three prominent personalities, Kanwaljit Singh Syan, Harpreet Acharya and Jaswinder Singh Gharial. Radio Africa's Kamal Kaur won in the radio category, while other big names of winners include Kenyan hockey legend Inderjit Singh Matharu, literary specialist Upkar Singh Hunjan, multi-talented Gupz Saund, journalist Ravneet Sehmi and popular DJ Preetpal Channa.
As the vice-chairman RYA, Inderjit Thethy pointed out "the losers aren't the nominees who haven't won, but those who don't take part".
The event's emcees were Harleen Jabbal and East FM's Vikash Pattni and the entertainment included a bharat natyam dance piece by the Channa sisters of Sachliv Channa, Rashpal Channa and Jasmine Channa and then a dhol and thumbi musical fusion by Arvinder Mudher and Gurpreet Roopra.
Among those in attendance were Narayan Swamy of the Indian high commission, chairman of Hindu Council of Kenya Nitin Malde, MP Sunjeev Kaur Birdi and CS Dr Hassan Wario.
