The Sikh community of Preston [U.K] will be holding the first ever Nagar Kirtan in the city on 18 May.
Marching from Tunbridge Street from around 9am the procession will move up New Hall Lane towards the Flag Market for the event.
Nagar Kirtan is a custom involving processional singing of holy hymns called Shabads. They take the Sikh holy scriptures through the streets of Preston. In this case from the Gurdwara in Tunbridge street to the Flag market.
Sikh communities from the city and other parts of Lancashire are taking part. This will be a colourful and lively event.
There will be speeches on the Flag Market. The procession then returns back to Tunbridge street, where further celebrations will take place until 4pm.
The Sikh religion, referred to as Sikhism today, was founded by Guru Nanak Dev Ji in the 15th century in Punjab, India and is one of the seven major world faiths. Preston now has the largest Sikh community in the Northwest (approximately 3000).
Roads along the march route will be temporarily closed to traffic.
