Gunisha Kaur has made history as the first Sikh appointed to the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), marking a significant milestone for Sikh representation and global human rights advocacy.

The historic appointment was announced by Chuck Schumer, who recommended Dr. Kaur for a two-year term on the independent bipartisan federal commission dedicated to defending freedom of religion and belief around the world.

A physician, medical anthropologist, researcher, and human rights advocate, Dr. Kaur has devoted her career to serving vulnerable and displaced communities globally. Announcing the appointment, Senator Schumer praised Dr. Kaur’s leadership and expertise, stating that her extensive background in medicine, research, human rights, and community service would greatly strengthen the Commission’s work.

Dr. Kaur has conducted groundbreaking research focused on migrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and survivors of persecution and torture. Her work has been supported by institutions including Cornell University, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Academy of Medicine. She earned degrees from Cornell University, Weill Cornell Medical College, and Harvard University.

Her appointment reflects the growing contributions of Sikhs in public service, academia, medicine, and global leadership. It also highlights the Sikh values of seva (selfless service), justice, and defending the rights and dignity of all people regardless of faith or background.

As a Commissioner, Dr. Kaur will help investigate religious freedom conditions around the world and contribute to shaping international human rights policy. Her voice and experience are expected to bring both compassion and expertise to the Commission’s mission.
