Members of Sikh council hosting celebrations for Langar week

Wednesday 12 November 2014:
GENEROUS members of Hampshire's Sikh community took to Southampton streets to feed nearly 1,000 people.

Volunteers set up a makeshift restaurant in the city centre to hand passers-by traditional Indian food.

The biggest stall was at the Civic Centre where many people stopped for curry and lentils before heading to the city's Festival of Remembrance at the Guildhall.

The meal donations marked the climax of Langar Week - a nationwide initiative taking place for the first time in towns and cities in Britain.

It was based on the faith's ancient Langar system nurturing equality by encouraging people of all backgrounds to share food together.

The institution was launched by the first Sikh Guru Nanak and also marks his birthday.

Worshippers in Southampton also dished out meals to the city's homeless.

Hampshire Sikh Council youth chairman Harmeet Singh Brar said: “It has been a fantastic night and we really want to do it again next year.”
