NHD, or National History Day is a well known competition which focuses on building students research, comprehension and analysis abilities. The competition is to choose a topic related to the yearly theme and present information about it in a condensed, requirement-strict format.

This year’s theme was: “Taking A Stand in History.”

LuceTbl (72K)Navtej Singh Kathuria, an 8th grader at Evergreen Middle School in Redmond, Washington, chose to write a 2500 word paper on Sirdar Jagjit Singh (J.J. Singh) and the Luce-Celler Act of 1946 which describes the tireless efforts of Sirdar Jagjit Singh. Sirdar Jagjit Singh was an instrumental figure in the passage of the act.

Navtej Kathuria writes: I, and all other US citizens of Indian heritage, can repay the debt of gratitude we owe to the tireless efforts of Sirdar Jagjit Singh and the generosity of the American public, by embracing and living the core values that uniquely define all of us as Americans. E pluribus Unum.

The paper written by Kathuria is available for reading at https://www.sikhiwiki.org/images/f/fe/NHD_FINAL_ESSAY.PDF
