The 'Be More' campaign has a vision to create a 'Beloved' community by 2040. The guiding ethics behind this campaign are really in line with the concept of 'sarbat da bhala'. Their introduction video cites, "Our demographics are changing rapidly. By 2040 there will be no 'racial' majority in America. Yet, this human invention is the biggest predictor of life opportunities in America. Dr. [Martin Luther] King said, 'Our goal is to create a beloved community and this will require a qualitative change in our souls as well as a qualitative change in our lives.' So how can we transform this goal into a reality? We asked 40 change agents about one change we need to make between now and 2040 to create an inclusive beloved community."

Among those 40 change agents selected is Simran Jeet Singh. Simran Jeet Singh says, "One thing I would like to see is a turning away form our current outlook which tends to be more self-centered, and then turning towards a more humble and empathetic orientation where we have a shared concern and connection with all of those around us."

Simran asks us to move toward compassion, empathy, and community instead of remaining isolated with self.

BeMoreLogo (7K)3 Ways You Can Prioritize Compassion & Empathy:

  • Practice Deep Listening. Which means just giving another the space to share their feelings.
  • Feeling anxious, worried, or defensive? Just say the following to yourself “It’s okay. I recognize these emotions and I am going to have compassion for myself.”
  • Next time you feel angry or upset with someone else, act wisely and calmly by saying “It’s okay and I recognize these emotions and I am going to have compassion for myself and for you.”
