Washington DC Sikhcess volunteers along with hundreds of volunteers from the Washington metropolitan area braved frigid temperatures on Saturday, November 22nd to help raise funds in the battle to end homelessness.

Sikhcess is a worldwide community service based organization dedicated to creating positive change by bridging cultural, socio-economic, and religious divides.

Sikhcess takes an active approach to public service by creating volunteer opportunities with the goal of enhancing quality of life for all humankind.

The volunteers arrived at the National Mall at 6:30 am to setup food stalls where they distributed bottled water and granola bars to walkers participating in the 21st Annual Fannie Mae Walk for the Homeless.

Despite below freezing temperatures and gusty winds throughout the day, our volunteers felt compelled to endure through the harsh elements. "This was a real eye opener because I've always had a passion for helping the homeless but never experienced being out in the cold for 6 hours at once," explained Mandeep Kaur, a Sikhcess volunteer involved in the community service project. "I just felt like giving up and going inside to warm up but I knew that people without a home have to do this all the time and it made me even more aware of hard it is to live on the streets." Last year DC Sikhcess participated in the first Worldwide Feed the Homeless campaign delivering over 1,600 food packages to several shelters throughout DC. Since then, 2 more Feed the Homeless campaigns were held in 2008, each producing more food packages than the previous campaign.

This continues a trend DC Sikhcess started in the summer of 2008 when volunteers helped at the Susan G.
Komen National Race for the Cure, an annual event that raises funds for breast cancer research. Volunteers play a crucial role especially in such large events that attract participants numbering in the tens of thousands. "It was empowering to see how much work a group of people could accomplish when working together and to realize that all of that work was translated into continuing to provide shelter for those who need it" said Amrit Kaur.

This year alone, the walk raised approximately $7 million for over 160 homeless service providers and charities working to prevent and end homelessness.

Sikhcess works to make a difference by placing volunteers in leadership roles to help alleviate poverty.

Sikhcess' mission is international; however, the organization's ability to tailor programs to the specific needs of a local community is where it excels. It immediately addresses concerns that threaten to deny individuals of their basic human needs. Furthermore, having access to support networks on a regional, national, and international level helps each community based program to maximize its ability to address and deliver services most needed to the local community.
