This week Sikh Coalition released a fantastic resource called 'Sikh Celebrations: Lessons & Activities for Inclusive Classrooms'.
The introduction to the workbook explains:
This resource provides simple and fun ways to create Sikh awareness in elementary school classrooms through sharing about holidays. Whether you are a student, parent or teacher, this guide includes something for you!
Material is provided for several prominent celebrations namely:
• Vaisakhi (April).
• Bandi Chhor Divas (October/November).
• Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Gurpurab (some Sikh communities celebrate this in November, and others celebrate it in April, the same time as Vaisakhi).
• Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s Gurpurab (December/January)
Each Sikh holiday comes with 3 ways to use this resource:
1. Greeting cards that can be sent digitally or printed and then given out.
2. Powerpoint show that can be presented in a classroom.
3. Activities and art geared to help children digest the message from the presentation.
The PDF includes a glossary with audio pronunciations of words like 'kesh' and 'khanda' along with a lot of other helpful links and resources regarding bullying and Sikh awareness in America.
Kudos to Sikh Coalition for putting this together, it is a must for Sikh parents and students.
