The Sikh community supported Obama in his campaign to become President of America, now they are going to celebrate his inauguration to the White House. There
will be a Ball in Washington on January 20. All this is possible due to
the efforts of Lakhinder Singh Vohra, a Woodbridge resident and
executive director of the Sikh Community Center, a community Web site
serving the local Sikh and Indian-American community, is organising the
first -ever Sikh Inaugural Ball, to be held in Washington
Lakhinder Singh Vohra is also the President of the Sikh chamber in America.
The Sikh Inaugural Ball will be held at Ascot, I-The Indian Experience Restaurant, just a few blocks from the White House.
So
far, ticket sales to the event have been slow, Vohra said. He said the
tough economic times, and the fact that the Sikh community has never
held an inaugural ball before, could explain the slow sales.
At the ball, guests will also be able to meet Supreet Malhi, a finalist in the Miss World Punjaban beauty pageant.
Deejay Lucky, a prominent Sikh who owns Platinum Entertainment is the official Dhol and DJ for the evening
DJ Lucky's sister is also a local
success story: She is one of the very few Indian-American women that
are commercial airline pilots and she will be honored for her
achievements at a later date at an event for female pioneers to be
hosted by the Sikh American Chamber of Commerce
The
Sikh Inaugural Ball has chosen Avan Bhathena, a prominent
Indian-American who is a resident of Houston, as the official portrait
artist
Avan, a Zoroastrian by religion, was
chosen by the Co-organizers of the Sikh Inaugural Ball, to be the
official portrait artist after careful consideration of her work and
her contributions to the Interfaith Initiative in the Houston area.
