The mission of Peace Learning Circles is to promote a culture of peace through education to youth and communities.
In our community
The first in a series of cultural awareness programs will be presented in southeastern Wisconsin on Wednesday and Thursday. “One Community, One World: Understanding the Sikh Community,” will feature internationally award-winning filmmakers and civil rights advocates, Valarie Kaur (www.valariekaur.com) and Sharat Raju (www.law.yale.edu/intellectuallife/15479.htm).
Since 9/11, there have been over 700 crimes committed against Sikhs. Kaur and Raju will narrate clips from their post 9/11 documentary “Divided We Fall” and their upcoming work, “Oak Creek, in Memoriam.” Raju’s short film, “American Made” will also be shown.
Dr. Kulwant Dhaliwal, an Oak Creek Sikh Gurdwara leader, and several members of the Sikh temple will give personal testimonies. There will also be time for questions and answers. Doors open at 6 p.m. to enjoy Sikh artwork and music. Seating is limited at both locations and reservations are required. Both events are free to the public.
The event in Oak Creek is a partnership between Racine Community Acupuncture and Peace Learning Circles and will be presented at Marcus South Shore Cinema, 7261 S. 13th St., Oak Creek, 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday. RSVP to attend the Marcus South Shore Cinema at (262) 939-0111 or email Christie@christiekern.com.

In our schools
PLC is once again looking for peace mentors to represent their school during the 19th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration sponsored by Gateway Technical College. The elementary, middle and high schools from Racine, Kenosha and Walworth counties are invited to select two peace mentors to be recognized for their positive actions. The students do not have to be the best athletes, the smartest, or the most popular. The students that are selected are positive role models — kind, caring, and compassionate and inclusive of others, even when it is not easy. The students and their parents will be invited to attend and be recognized at the 19th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration from noon-1 p.m. on Jan. 21. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Reviving the Dream through Education.” The deadline to submit the names of the recipients is Dec. 21. Contact Peace Learning Circles for more information at (262) 939-1285 if you would like your school to participate.
With gratitude
We would not be able to do the work we do without the many generous donations we receive. Gateway Technical College and the Kenosha Library Southwest branch have graciously hosted the Peacemakers Workshops this school year. The Racine Community Foundation, Kenosha Community Foundation and the Kenosha United Way have funded PLC school and community programs for the 2012-13 school year. We are also grateful for the many donations we received from Bradford Community Church, Wednesday Optimist Club of Racine, Kiwanis Club of West Racine, Mount Pleasant Chiropractic and Rehab and all of the many individual donors, volunteers, in-kind donations and ambassadors for PLC. We would not be able to continue to bring valuable programs to our schools and communities without them.
