One Month Later, Mr. Mukker Still Recovering From Hate Crime
October 8, 2015 (Chicago, IL) – Today marks one month since the vicious hate crime that left Inderjit Singh Mukker, a Sikh father of two, hospitalized with a concussion and facial injuries after he was called a "terrorist" and assaulted in his car. On the evening of September 8th, Mr. Mukker was on his way to the grocery store when the attack was initiated.

One month later, Mr. Mukker is still recovering from the physical and emotional trauma of the assault and is still unable to return to work as an Uber driver. “My wounds continue to heal, but mentally I’m still trying to recover from what happened,” said Mr. Mukker. “Thank you for your ongoing support, it means so much to me and my family.”
The Sikh Coalition, with the support of hundreds of community members in Chicago and thousands of Sikhs across the nation, quickly rallied to Mr. Mukker’s side last month. We worked together to ensure that hate crime charges were brought against the assailant. We will work to ensure that this case is prosecuted as a hate crime.

This victory was crucial, not because we seek a harsher penalty for the assailant, but because we demand that our government legally acknowledge the problem of hatred in our country. We got there with your support, but we need your help to continue.
Last month, through the One Nation Fund, we helped launch a donation page for Mr. Mukker and his family. So far, through the support of the sangat, we have raised $1,486. As Mr. Mukker continues to heal, any small donation you can make will go a long way to eliminating this burden from his recovery and assisting with mounting medical fees. Every dollar you donate will go directly to Mr. Mukker and his family. The Sikh Coalition has also compiled over 1,000 messages of love and support and delivered them to Mr. Mukker.

The Sikh Coalition remains active in providing legal support in this case and remains tirelessly committed to providing legal representation to any Sikh American who experiences a hate crime.
As always, the Sikh Coalition urges all Sikhs to practice their faith fearlessly.
