Serving in her capacity as a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN’s refugee agency, Angelina Jolie visited the Khalsa Diwan Welfare Society in New Delhi in November 2006.

The organisation is run by Afghan Sikh refugees for other refugees. During her visit, Jolie chatted with students – some of the 9,500 Afghan refugees under the direct care of the UN Refugee Agency in India – about their passion for learning English and computer skills. She also listened to Sikh children playing kirtan.

The story of Sikhs in Afghanistan forms the subject of a special talk being delivered this Friday 1st March at the Ancient India and Iran Trust.

In ‘The Sikhs of Afghanistan: some notes towards a cultural, social and literary history ca. 1600-2012?, Dr Jeevan Deol will offer his thoughts on the history of the Afghani Sikhs from ancient times to the present day.

The talk will be held in the Trust’s library at Ancient India & Iran Trust, 23 Brooklands Avenue, Cambridge CB2 8BG.
