October 03, 2013: This weekend, the Mooresque detail and influence of the Louis C. Tiffany designed Willard Memorial Chapel is an apt setting for a concert of the contemplative sounds of sacred kirtan music.
Musician Ajeet Kaur is bringing her harmonium and her colleagues percussionist K.C. Solaris and guitarist Ezra Landis fill out the trio's instrumentation during their Auburn stop of their fall tour of east coast locations.
"We're very excited to have her," said Lucy Thomas, a chapel administrator, of the 21-year-old recording artist. "This girl is amazing."
Kaur and her band will perform sacred chant and devotional music for an audience expected to travel from Ithaca, Rochester and Syracuse.
"I believe the chapel offers a meditative environment and not from just the Tiffany aspect, but its entire design with all the middle eastern art," Thomas said. "To hear this is going to be really something special."
This summer, Kaur, a kundalini yoga instructor and healer, released her first CD "Sacred Waters: Flow from Emotion to Devotion" on the Spirit Voyage label. The disc contains three lengthy tracks and includes written instructions for two yoga mantra meditations that inspire clarity, grace, radiance, protection and balanced emotions.
Kaur's crystalline voice is easy on the ear and yet full of energy. She has studied folk traditions of Irish and Indian music while traveling extensively through those countries and her sound is a blend of ancient mantras combined with contemporary music influences.
"Knowing Ajeet there will be some humor in there too," Thomas said.
After the concert, Kaur will sign her CD and attend a reception at the chapel with refreshments provided by various community kundalini yoga classes and instructors.
Some of the proceeds from Kaur's concert series appearance are put toward the restoration of a wall and two pillars in the chapel. Many layers of latex paint have been removed recently to reveal the dark crimson red wall intended by the original designer.
"The project is not finished," Thomas said. "Funding is the big issue and that's going to take time."
The Willard Memorial Chapel Tiffany Concert Series brings various musicians to Auburn from brass bands to harp duos to perform in the one-of-a-kind venue.
"The variety is just wonderful," Thomas said.
