"I send my best wishes to everyone in Britain and around the world celebrating Vaisakhi.
I know that this festival is an important time for Sikhs as you come together with friends and family to commemorate the birth of the Khalsa.
This year marks 160 years since the first Sikhs arrived in Britain. Since that time you have made an incredibly important contribution to our country in to many ways.
From entrepreneurs and small businesses to hardworking families and public servants, British Sikhs do our country proud and I am delighted that you are a part of our island story.
Another aspect of your contribution stands out: seva, or selflessness. We see it across the country - whether that is Gurdwaras preparing meals for their communities or charities helping those in need.
As we celebrate the Sikhs' contribution to Britain today, let us also reflect on what your ancestors did for this nation in the past. A hundred years ago thousands of Sikhs fought for Britain in the First World War. Many fell for the freedom we enjoy today - and we must never forget that.
So at this important time of the year I give thanks for everything you do and wish you all a very happy and peaceful Vaisakhi.
