Wednesday, September,25 2013 - LONDON/CHANDIGARH:
Another slice of Punjab’s history and heritage is set to go under the hammer in London next month by a British auction house.

A miniature silver ‘chhattri’ (parasol), said to be from the 19th Century and depicting the ten Sikh Gurus, is from the personal collection of late Sir Charles Umpherston Aitchison and will be auctioned by Bonham’s auctioneers.

It may be mentioned here that a 1400-piece silver dinner set once belonging to Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala and The Amritsar Treaty, signed between founder of Sikh empire Maharaja Ranjit Singh and East India Company’s Charles T Metcalfe in 1809, were auctioned in London earlier this year.

It has been suggested by Bonham’s that the miniature ‘chhattri’ may have once hung over Guru Granth Sahib. Along with the ‘chhattri’, three wax seal impressions will also be auctioned.

Aitchison was the Lt Governor of Punjab from 1882-1887 and Lahore’s well-known Aitchison is named after him.
