Columbus, Ohio - Sophomore Amrit Kaur Bhinder fenced her way to All-America status on the final day of fencing at the NCAA Championships as the Quakers finished eighth overall in the event.
Bhinder finished seventh overall with 13 victories in epee to be named second-team All-America. She is the first second-team All-America selection for the Quakers since Abigail Emerson earned the honor in foil 2007. She is the first epeeist to be to be a first or second-team All-American since 2005 when Holly Buechel was a first team selection.
As a team Penn finished eighth overall with 91 bout victories over the four days. The Red and Blue were one of four Ivy League schools to finish in the top ten. Notre Dame won the overall competition, beating two-time defending national champion Penn State by eight bouts, 174-168. Princeton was the top Ivy finisher in fourth, while Harvard (6) and Columbia (7) finished ahead of the Red and Blue.
In addition to Bhinder, Penn had a pair of fencers competing in sabre. Junior Dominika Franciszkowicz finished just out of All-America contention by taking 13th with 11 victories and senior Danielle Kamis won eight bouts to finish 19th. Freshman Gabby Foor, the Quakers other fencer in the Championships, finished with four victories in epee.
The Red and Blue finished in eighth for the second consecutive year and also had four All-Americans between the men's and women's teams.
