405 MARTYRDOM OF FIFTH SIKH GURU, SRI GURU ARJAN DEVJI
OBSERVED ON SUNDAY WITH DEVOTION AND GAIETY

The 405th Martyrdom of fifth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Arjan Devji, who compiled Guru Granth Sahibji and sacrificed life at the altar of dharma, concluded on Sunday, with large number of Sikhs devotees and other community faiths observing Shaheedi Divas with religious fervour, gaiety and devotion.

The major programme of the concluding event was organised under the aegis of Prabhandak Committee, Gurudwara Saheb Nalebagh, Sikh Chawni, Uppuguda where large number of devotees participated in the "Vishaal Deewan" (Mass Congregation) at Quli Qutub Shah Stadium, Opp. City College by offering prayers to Guru Granth Sahebji (Holy Scripture of Sikhs).

Prabhandak Committee, Chairman, S Jahan Singh said that the congregation which began at 11 am continued up to 5 pm and was marked by the recitations of Holy Gurbani Keertans (Holy Hymns) by the renowned Ragi Jathas (Community Preachers ) who were specially invited from various parts of the country for the important occasion.

Bhai Davinder Singhji Sodhi, Ludhiana, Bhai Rajinder Singh, Sri Hazur Sahibwale, Nanded, Bhai Hari Singh, Nanak Singh Sukhmani, Bhai Gurdit Singh and other Ragi Jathas rendered shabad keertans that stressed on imbibing the higher values of life for which Guru Arjan Devji strived. The Guru who stood for national integration, peace, brotherhood and communal harmony, they recalled.

After the culmination of the congregation the traditional Guru-ka-Langar (free community kitchen) was served to all the devotees where devotees sit in the same row with great discipline promoting the feelings of togetherness, fraternity and concern for fellow human beings.

Prabhandak Committee Chairmant, S Jahan Singh and other office bearers welcomed the devotees at the congregation.

BRIEF HISTORY OF GURU ARJAN DEVJI:

The greatest contribution of Guru Arjan Devji to the nation was his supreme sacrifice. Gurujis' ever growing influence amongst the people perturbed Emperor Jehangir. Under royal instruction the Governor of Lahore had him arrested on a frivolous charge and subjected him to severe torture that eventually resulted in the Guru's death.

Guru Arjan Dev Ji set the noblest example of courage and boldness in resisting the wrongs of the mightiest power on earth, and thus sowed the seed that was to bear rich fruit in the times to come.

It was the turning point in the growth and development of Sikh Community. He was the first in the long series of Sikh martyrs. His martyrdom entire changed the character of reformatory religious movement. The Sikhs were transmuted from a pacifist to assertive and marshal people after the execution of Guru Arjan Dev Ji.
