March 12, 2016: Canada’s newly elected young prime minister, Justin Trudeau on Friday said that he had more Sikhs in his cabinet than India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi does.
Tudeau was interacting with university students during his three-day visit to the United States. While most of the questions were focused on the policy matter and the latest political phenomenon in the US, Donald Trump, a student from Punjab in India congratulated the young Canadian leader for having many Punjabi ministers in his cabinet.
“I have more Sikhs in my cabinet than Modi does,” Trudeau said as the students broke into laughter.
Having won the federal election in Canada last year, Trudeau inducted four ministers who have roots in India, and out of those four, three are Sikhs.
In contrast, Narendra Modi’s cabinet has only two Sikh ministers- Harsimrat Kaur Badal and Maneka Gandhi who was born in a Sikh family.
Most prominent Sikh face of Justin Trudeau’s cabinet is Harjeet Sajjan, who has the Defence portfolio.
Navdeep Bains is the minister of innovation, science and economic development, Badrish Chagger is minister of small business and tourism and Amarjeet Sohi is minister for infrastructure and communities. – SBS.com
