This year, EcoSikh released a statement on climate change from the Sikh perspective, the first of its kind from a Sikh organization. The statement outlines new actions Sikhs can take to strengthen their connection to the Sikh faith through environmentalism, and expand their political voice within their communities.

Raising Awareness About Punjab Groundwater Problems

EcoSikh raised concern over the severe groundwater depletion of Punjab and other parts of Northern India. Recently, 60 Minutes, a renowned news program from CBS News, showed the recent findings through satellite and newly developed devices which track the amount of groundwater. Punjab and rest of the India have lost groundwater at an alarming rate and are facing an impending disaster.

Policy Work With the U.S. State Department

EcoSikh was invited by the State Department to take part in a roundtable discussion on the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Participants of this talk include representatives from the Department of State, Department of Treasury, and President Obama's climate change advisors. Religious representatives included people from various faiths including: Sikh, Muslim, Jews, Methodist, and Quaker participants. EcoSikh explored partnership activities with the Department of State and the United Nations. EcoSikh also raised the question of how local and community-level environmental initiatives are being considered by those in senior-level positions. U.S. President Barack Obama's climate change agenda was also discussed at the meeting, including U.S. efforts to finance the Green Climate Fund, a framework to help developing nations with adaptation and mitigation practices to counter climate change.

Building a Sikh Presence with the Department of Energy

EcoSikh joined a round table discussion of faith leaders on climate change convened by the US Secretary of Energy, Dr. Ernest Moniz, at the Department of Energy in Washington today. EcoSikh was invited to represent Sikh perspective. Secretary Moniz is a former MIT faculty professor and President Obama's cabinet member who is leading the nation towards American leadership in science and clean energy technology innovation. Dr. Rajwant Singh, President of EcoSikh, suggested that Energy department involve various stakeholders to create a larger dialogue on this critical issue. Role of media is crucial in creating a larger awareness and mass level understanding of this issue.

Interfaith Action on the UN Climate Summit in Lima, Peru

Representatives from the Christian, Baha'i, Sikh, Buddhist, Jewish, Muslim and other faiths sent a strong message to President Obama at the White House and UN representatives currently gathered in Lima, Peru, for talks to negotiate a global treaty on climate change. This treaty is to be signed by heads of state in Paris in December 2015. In a cold freezing evening, the faith leaders sang, prayed and joined hands in solidarity for environmental action and climate justice. The event was named "Light for Lima," which references the UN climate change talks in Lima, Peru.

EcoSikh at the People's Climate March

Sikhs joined more than 400,000 activists to demand climate justice in the largest climate march in history. The People's Climate March attracted individuals of different faiths, backgrounds, and countries to make a statement on climate change and to demand justice for the environment. The march, which coincided with the beginning of UN General Assembly meetings also taking place in New York, attracted hundreds of international and national groups, churches, schools and other environmental organizations.
