The day before Baisakhi the bustle of 300 boys and men tying their turbans At the Queens NY Makhan Shah Labana Gurdwara was upstaged by 13 girls in their beautiful turbans.
For the first time, these 13 girls tied turbans and experienced the grace and nobility that it gave them and their appearance. Rather than compete they spent the day learning about their Bana and the importance of Turban and spiritual identity. One of the judges, Sardarni Sahiba SatKirin Kaur Khalsa Organized the girls event to be included in this initially, all boys/men event.
Minti Kaur of Westchester brought beautiful white turban cloth galore and wooden combs for their hair. Charanbeer Kaur and her daughter Yashmeet Kaur drove all the way from Pennsylvania to help with the girls turbans. As Charanbeer Kaur explained:
"Yashmeet and I felt honored to be a part of the event! For years I wanted to start keeping my head covered at all times, but started doing it in 2004.
I think the reason was, no one was there to teach me how to tie a turban. It was very nice of you to be there and to show girls how beautiful they can look in their turbans. Before we left that day, some girls asked us if we can tie them turban on Sikh Day parade as well and we were really pleased with that. Looks like they just need to have some one to help them".
Fortunately for all, Sikhnet has a feature of numerous turban tying clips for women as well as for the men's turbans.
The event hosted by the Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle of Richmond Hill, is planning to continue all across the United States. Lets give them a hand for including the girls and encourage them to continue the girls part of this great fun and practical event.
