Wai Young, the new MP From Vancouver South, just finished a session of Parliament that had the longest filibuster in Canadian history. This is quite the change from previous representation in Vancouver South in which the now ex-MP Ujjal Dosanjh who had one of the worst attendance records (more than 92% of all MPs).
VANCOUVER – Vancouver – The new MP for Vancouver South brought her constituents together for the first time to personally give her thanks.
Over 250 attendees were treated to a buffet of Indian and Chinese food along with a barbecue at Sunset Community Center. The atmosphere at the picnic was very laid back, casual and fun in comparison to the intense campaign period which was marred by daily sensationalized and manipulated attacks by her opponent.
So far Wai Young seems to be delivering on the community’s expectations. She has been appointed to several committees (Status of Women, Public Safety and National Security) and just finished a session of Parliament that had the longest filibuster in Canadian history.
(Filibuster is the right of an individual MP to extend debate or entirely prevent a vote on a proposal by talking out the bill without any time constraints). The filibuster came as result of the Canada Post strike. The process lasted 58 hours 24/7.
Young was given the night shift duty and literally worked and slept in the house of Parliament. This is quite the change from previous representation in Vancouver South in which the now ex-MP had one of the worst attendance records (more than 92% of all MPs).
Another fact that was very obvious at this gathering was that Wai Young has brought her community together. Individuals from every different ethnic group in her riding were present. This is about bridging the gaps and working together. The Sikh community was very well represented at the non political gathering.
This was a time to mingle and cherish the success. “We are very proud of the work that she has done so far and hope that she will continue successfully. We look forward to working with her in the future to address our community’s issues”, stated the Sikh Youth Vancouver, who not only campaigned but took all their supporters to Young’s camp.
“We wanted good representation in this riding and we go it. We will support any individual that puts the community’s concerns before their own political aspirations. This is a refreshing positive change for us all and a great new start”.
Finally, Vancouver South has a voice that will listen to them. Wai Young invited everyone in the riding to bring their concerns and issues to her constituency office at 6406 Victoria Drive in Vancouver. The office is in the final stages of renovations and will be fully operational in a couple of weeks. In the meantime issues can be addressed at 604-775-5323.
