Virsa sambhal Gatka competition at Gurm on April 10
Ludhiana: April 7- To upkeep and conserve inheritance of traditional martial art, International Sikh Martial Art Academy (ISMAA) is organising its 14th virsa sambhal Gatka competition at village Gurm on April 10 on the eve of Baisakhi.
Disclosing this ISMAA chairman Harjeet Singh Grewal and senior vice chairman Jaswant Singh Chhapa said this competition is being organised in association with District Gatka Association Ludhiana in which various men and women Gatka teams would exhibit combating skills in Gatka fights and weapon demonstrations.
"Sikh Martial Art Academy has chalked out a comprehensive plan to organise traditional Gatka tourneys in the country to perpetuate the rich legacy of age-old martial art Gatka amongst the future generations on one hand and to revive this dying art on the other" they added.
He said earlier, Gatka was only the domain of males, now even females have been outperforming the males by displaying their rare acumen in Gatka sport. "ISMAA has determined to promote Indian ancient martial art amongst young girls and household women so that they could protect themselves," Grewal stressed.
It is mentioned here that Gatka is a style of fighting only with sticks between two Gatka players, intended to simulate sword and focuses on infusing physical, spiritual and mental fitness. No sharp edged weapon is used in Gatka game.
