Amritsar | Aug 11, 2016: A team from a UK-based Sikh volunteers’ group started cleaning the gold plating on Golden Temple that has been affected by pollution, here on Thursday. The 20-member team from Birmingham’s Nishkam Sewak Jatha, which was assigned the sewa (service) by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee last month, will only work on the sanctum sanctorum of Harmandar Sahib and take a week, working from 8am to 6 pm.

“The cleaning is done with reetha (soap nut), and the team will remove dust and other particles that have affected the sheen,” said SGPC additional secretary Daljit Singh Bedi. This is the same group that performed the sewa in 1999 too. “The SGPC has got the cleaning done from time to time.”
