Wahe Guru Ji Ka Khalsa, Wahe Guru Ji Ki Fateh !
Sukh Sagar Park naming ceremony that took place this last weekend.
Hundreds of Community members from New Westminster and around the Lower Mainland, came together on Saturday 9th July, for the unique opening ceremony of Sukh Sagar Park. This is the first time in North American Sikh History that a prominent park has been named after a Gurdwara Sahib.
The day of festivities started off with the Gurdwara Executive members thanking the Sikh community and residents of the local Queensbourough community, who regularly participate in community events undertaken by the Gurdwara Sahib, such as the annual new Westminster Nagar Kirtan. The speeches were followed by a Gatka demonstration, where the history of this Sikh Martial Art was explained in English and Punjabi and children, women and other adults from Gurdwara Sukh Sagar Gatka Classes performed an amazing Sikh Martial Art demonstration. These participants have only recently learned these skills, through weekly classes at Gurdwara Sukh Sagar and the onlookers were awed with the skills, and many had never seen women practicing Gatka and were amazed to learn that this Martial Art is open to all, regardless of gender and age.
