My
mother, Sat Nam Kaur with my sister, |
My mother, Sat Nam Kaur, found her spiritual inspiration through the music and mantras taught by Yogi Bhajan. In the late 1990's, she pioneered the 3HO Herndon Music Festival. For a number of years, she raised money and sponsored Guru Dass, Livtar, Snatam Kaur, and many others to visit Virginia for a weekend of chanting, kundalini yoga, good food and fun times.
These festivals were a strong inspiration to Guruganesha when he founded Spirit Voyage Records. She was the first Spirit Voyage employee in 2000. She passed away in 2003 from breast cancer. Before she died, I promised her I would plan a festival and share her love of this music with the world. Things finally came together this year for it to manifest.
Late in 2009, I was compelled to find new ways to share the music of Nirinjan Kaur and Gurunam Singh. Their music inspired me so much. I was convinced people would fall in love with it when they hear them. I knew that if we could bring together super talented young artists with more accomplished ones, it would be really positive for everyone.
So we approached Snatam Kaur & Guruganesha Singh about working with us to put on a festival. They loved the idea. We went out and found a beautiful location in the mountains 90 miles from Washington DC. It had a great venue, and with our sound engineer, it will have excellent sound. We had to have the best Kundalini Yoga so we pursued Gurmukh. When she signed on, I knew this event was going to be the absolute best.
It is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
And this is how Spirit Fest was born.
The lineup includes Snatam Kaur, Guruganesha Singh, Gurmukh Kaur, Mirabai Ceiba, Sat Kirin, Sat Kartar, Nirinjan, Hari Bhajan Kaur (NM), Gurunam Singh, Sat Jot Singh and more to come.
Spirit Fest will be held September 17-19 2010, 90 miles from Washington DC in Highview West Virginia.
