Hello Everyone!
We are very proud to announce that two of our very own Calgary's Sikh Youth are running in the Scotiabank Calgary Marathon on Sunday, May 29th, 2011.
Vikram Johal and Raminder Dhaliwal will be completing the Centaur Subaru Half Marathon which is a whopping 21.1 km race. They are calling on the Sikh community to not only come out and support them while taking part in fun activities at Murdoch Park but to also sponsor them for this event as they have both decided to run for a cause.
Raminder Dhaliwal supports the Animal Rescue Foundation which is an organization that "rescues stray and unwanted dogs and cats from [different] areas and places them in loving, permanent homes while providing programs to reduce pet over-population". Their vision (see below) is to "promote and encourage responsible pet ownership and to ensure humane treatment, compassion and respect for all dogs and cats". Raminder feels that animal abuse is often overlooked in our community and has therefore, decided to raise awareness and take a positive step to help this cause. Vikram Johal supports the Huntington Society of Canada. "Huntington disease (HD) is an inherited brain disorder that causes cells in specific parts of the brain to die." "Symptoms include emotional turmoil (depression, apathy, obsessive behavior), mental loss (inability to focus, think and recall, make decisions) and physical deterioration that eventually leads to complete incapacitation and death." Currently, there is no cure or treatments that help slow the effects of this disease in humans. The Huntington Society of Canada (see below) maximizes the quality of life of people living with HD and enables research to find appropriate treatments and a cure.
