World renowned artist, Kanwar Singh has created his first ever painting focusing on the modern era of Sikh history dedicated to the contributions of Sikh soldiers during the Great War (1914-1918). It echoes the sacrifice, dedication to justice, and sense of duty that Sikhs have carried on from the Guru’s Legacy throughout their history. The piece, ‘Stand on Guard for Thee’ takes its title from the Canadian national anthem and captures the essence of the Sikh Soldiers spirit and dedication to the country he calls home. Kanwar Singh’s unveiling will augment this milestone event in remembrance of World War 1 and the contribution of Sikhs as part of the allied forces.
The Sikh Heritage Museum of Canada (SHMC) is honored to have Kanwar Singh unveil the painting at their ‘A Call to Flanders – Sikhs in the Great War’ exhibition. The year 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the Great War; the exhibition will have never seen before artifacts, paintings and military uniforms from the period. SHMC is also proud to host the filmmaker, Michael Singh as we share his internationally acclaimed documentary film, 'The Prisoner's Song.' [See below - ED]
The Sikh Heritage Museum of Canada is dedicated to advancing and promoting knowledge, understanding and preservation of the cultural and religious life of the Sikh people and their heritage in the diaspora. ‘A Call to Flanders’ is one of many events that are currently being undertaken by the Sikh Heritage Museum of Canada. Also, a travelling exhibit titled ‘The Lions of the Sea’ is making its rounds nationwide in Canada, and it highlights the failures and success of the ‘Komagata Maru’ incident in 1914.
