KUALA LUMPUR: Dya Singh, a Sikh musician based in Melbourne, and Vic Briggs, who is now known as Vikram Singh, a former member of the 60s pop band The Animals, kicked off their 38.2km walk from Taman Tasik Permaisuri Cheras to Malacca.

The Unity WalkKL2Malacca, organised by the Sikh Women’s Awareness Society (SWAN), started off at 8.30am yesterday.

The duo are expected to spend about a week on the road before reaching the Malacca Gurdwara on Saturday in conjunction with the annual memorial prayers for Sant Sohan Singh.

Sant Sohan, who died on May 24, 1972, made Malacca a popular Sikh missionary centre during his lifetime.

Dya and Vikram stopped at the Mantin Gurdwara for spiritual programme and yoga sessions before proceeding to Seremban today. They are expected to be in Rembau tomorrow.

Dya, 59, who had walked from Ipoh to Kuala Lumpur two years ago and from Penang to Kuala Lumpur last year, hoped the event would spur the public to join them instead of being cooped up in air-conditioned offices, shopping malls and their vehicles most of the time.

The Victoria Institution (1963-69) alumnus, who now lives in Australia, said Malaysia was the most beautiful country in the world.

“I always enjoy coming back here to see Malaysia, to meet the people, to enjoy the beautiful countryside and have a good time, so the best way to enjoy that is to go for a walk. That is the main reason why I’m going for a walk from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca,” he said.

Dya said it would be a bonus for him if he could get more Malaysians to know that they had a lovely country and more of them into the habit of exercising and not littering.

Meanwhile, SWAN president Dr Manjit Kaur Ludher said the organisation felt that the walk was a great opportunity to bring people of all walks of life together.

“All of us have to take steps to ensure that the thread of unity, currently perceived to be fragile, is strengthened for the good of all in Malaysia.

“We hope that with each step these men take in their spiritual and physical journey, our prayer for the nation becomes stronger,” she said, adding that the walk was also to celebrate SWAN’s fifth anniversary. — Bernama
