The Sikh Council UK has announced the launch of the Safer Sikhs Partnership, a collaboration of professionals working to implement safeguarding practices within the Sikh community.
The Safer Sikhs Partnership is a project developed by the Community Safety Sub-Committee of Sikh Council UK and will work to provide safeguarding tools, educational materials and support for Gurdwaras, Sikh organisations and Sikh communities across the country.
Safer Sikhs Partnership was launched on 7 December at a special event held at the Houses of Parliament, London.
A website with full details and access to all resources and training is being prepared for launch. Sikh Council UK will also be circulating dates of regional awareness roadshows and further information for Gurdwaras and organisations.
Secretary General of Sikh Council UK, Gurmel Singh said, “I am pleased the launch event has cross-party support and will be hosted by two senior and respected parliamentarians. This launch comes after a great deal of hard work by dedicated individuals and I wish to give my thanks to all those involved.”
Chair of the Community Safety Sub-Committee of Sikh Council UK, Bal Sandhu will be one of those leading the projected. Bal said, “Both Seema Malhotra and Dominic Grieve are MP’s in constituencies with significant Sikh communities. Their support is extremely welcome and helpful in promoting this exciting initiative.”
She added, “I am also pleased that national agencies including NSPCC and Barnardos are supporting this initiative. Leaflets and posters we have produced on the important topic of grooming have been endorsed by the NSPCC. This confidence in our work helps assure the community of the importance and value of the work being carried out.”
