12th May 2015: THE Woolgoolga Sikh community has raised $3000 to provide relief for those in Vanuatu affected by Cyclone Pam.

The deadly cyclone tore through the island nation in March and the money will be used to help rebuild communities, as well as to support health and education programs.

The money was raised as part of Rotary Australia's Vanuatu Cyclone Pam disaster appeal.

The Sikh community's donation was bolstered by the $2500 raised by Woolgoolga Rotary Club and $1100 raised by Woolgoolga's True Blue Life and Fitness.

Guru Nanak Sikh Temple member John Arkan said they chose to work with Rotary because the club is already on the ground in Vanuatu.

"One of our Rotarians has been over there and come back so we've got a good assessment," Mr Arkan said.

"We know where the money needs to be sent and we're sending it there."

The donation was presented to Woolgoolga Rotary Club on Wednesday at the Guru Nanak Sikh Temple.

Mr Arkan, raj Davinder Bisla, Sulakhan Singh, Swarin Singh and Kirpal Husna presented the cheque to Woolgoolga Rotary Club treasurer Leslie Casey.

"It's a magnificent demonstration of how this community pitches in together," Mr Arkan said.
