Sikh awareness through community service
Sikhs are often misunderstood in areas they live. The lack of familiarity with individual Sikhs is a main reason for the lack of understanding them and their religion. Sangat of Albany, NY has formed American Sikhs for humanity which is a non-profit organization spreading awareness on Sikhism through various community service. More than awareness the organization is trying to reinforce Sikh way of life, giving back to the community. "Nanak naam chardikala, tere bhanee sarbat da bhalla", which translates as 'Nanak asks for Naam with which comes well-being and positive spirit and with your blessing lord, may everyone in the world prosper'.
American Sikhs for humanity in Albany, NY recently hosted a very successful blood drive in the Gurudwara (Sikh Temple). This event was hosted with invitation on various local religious organizations like Churches, Synagogues and Mosques which helped shed some light on the religion and the values of community service (seva). American Sikh for humanity is also actively organizing various events especially continuous clothes and food drives. They also participate in distribution of prepared hot food to homeless shelters on regular intervals and organizing to participate in backpack program with the regional food banks.
American Sikhs for humanity is planning to host their next blood drive event in May23rd. In near future they would like to host a blood drive event as a Regional event in various Sikh Temples in NJ, NY, MA and neighboring states in collaboration with other organizations. American Sikhs for Humanity is a grassroots organization and want any and all to join hands in this seva and host a regional blood drive in upcoming months across northeast. This is a call for wholeheartedly support and participation by everyone to make this event a successful one. We are all small organizations spread across like beads of one simarna (meditation beads), let's get together to host a regional event this time and then plan for a national and then global event for Sikh awareness and seva.
