THE town's first Sikh scout group is being launched this month.
Starting out with a beavers group, the 13th Slough Sikh Scouts will be open to 30 children aged six to eight.
Volunteers, including a teacher at Slough Grammar School, an adviser at Slough Borough Council and a unit manager working with children and young adults with special needs, are behind the group set up with support from the Scout Association.
Chairman Balwinder Randhawa said: "We were looking at what was available for young Sikh children and what there was to bring young Sikhs together and we decided to set up the project.
"We will be looking at physical activities, charity work, development as individuals, life skills, good communication and bringing the Sikh religion into that as well.
"We will be following the format of the Scout Association and they are supporting the whole project."
Parents and children interested in joining Slough's first Sikh scouts are invited to an open evening at Khalsa Primary School in Wexham Road, Slough, on Wednesday between 6.30-7.30pm.
The group, will be based at Khalsa School, but is independently run by a group of volunteers already on board, including leaders Nirmal Singh and Mandip Kaur.
Following the beavers launch, the next step will be to set up groups for older children. Mrs Randhawa said: "We have a good group of core volunteers with various backgrounds and it has been amazing because they have picked up everything. Parents have also shown a lot of interest and some are already showing an interest in groups for older children."
She added: "We want to develop the group gradually. It could be quite a big project so we want to make sure we get it right."
