June 20, 2015:

Salem's Dasmesh Darbar Sikh Temple celebrated the life of the first Sikh martyr Saturday with its annual Nagar Kirtan parade.

The event honored Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji Sahib's Martyrdom Day. Guru Arjan became the first Sikh martyr when Emperor Jahangir ordered his execution in 1606.

Hundreds of people participated in the Salem celebration. The parade began at 12:30 p.m. at the temple on Oakhill Avenue SE, continued on Commercial Street and Hoyt Street SE, went past Gilmore Field City Park, then continued on 12th Street SE back to the temple.
