“ The eyes of the Khalsa glow with the vision of the Invisible... When he or she runs, it is in trance. On the bed of thorns, he lies on roses. Outside is immaterial; it is the aim of life that matters... The Khalsa looks at the world from a supreme height, blessing all, helping all, loving all, with his beautiful looks from the inner self of all life. ” - Professor Puran Singh

The Saanjh Sikh Scholarship would like to announce its 2011 recipients, five high school seniors from California and Texas entering institutions of higher education. The 2011 Scholars are Navjot Kaur (UCLA), Amandeep Singh (UC Davis), Mankushpreet Kaur (UC Davis) , Ramnik Kaur (U of Texas), and Harjeet Kaur (U of Texas).

These students were selected on the merit of their academic and extracurricular accomplishments as well as their commitment to seva, Sikhi, and potential for leadership as young Sikh American citizens. In the words of Mankushpreet Kaur, a Fall 2011 freshman at University of California – Davis, “It is a great honor to be a recipient of the Saanjh Scholarship.Saanjh Sevadars recognized my abilities and have inspired me to work hard in the upcoming years. I would like to thank Saanjh for awarding me the scholarship as it will help me reach my goals.”

The Saanjh Sikh retreat is held annually in the San Francisco Bay Area, and provides a space for college students and young professionals to discuss Sikhi and tackle contemporary Sikh issues. At the 2009 retreat, a group of university students mobilized to create a scholarship project that would facilitate funds to underprivileged, high achieving students pursuing higher education in California. In its first year, the Saanjh Scholarship team met and exceeded its applicant and fundraising goal and awarded scholarships to 4 students. After realizing the clear and desperate need for educational funding support and scholarships for the Sikh community, the Scholarship Team expanded the project to Texas in its second and current year. This year, 5 students from California and Texas were selected as Scholarship recipients.

The Saanjh Sikh Scholarship committee thanks all our supporters and donors who helped make this initiative a success. A total of $13,000 has been awarded over the past two years. With the community’s continuing support, we hope to continue to provide scholarship and mentorships to students pursuing higher education in the coming years. All donations are tax deductible.
