This weekend SALDEF will present the fifth part of the series Demystifying U.S. History and Activating Sikh Action for Black Justice Movements. Part V of the series Roots and Resistance: Anti-Blackness in American Visual Culture with Professor Bridget R. Cooks will present the roots of anti-Blackness in American art and explore how those ideas of hate have developed through the twenty-first century in popular visual culture. Cooks will also share examples of resistance to hate by contemporary Black visual artists.

with Professor Bridget R. Cooks
Professor Bridget R. Cooks is an Associate Professor in the Department of African American Studies and the Department of Art History at University of California, Irvine. Cooks' research focuses on African American art and culture, Black visual culture, museum criticism, film, feminist theory and post-colonial theory. In 2002 she earned her doctorate degree in the Visual and Cultural Studies Program at the University of Rochester. She has received a number of awards, grants and fellowships for her work including the prestigious James A. Porter & David C. Driskell Book Award in African American Art History, and the Henry Luce Dissertation Fellowship in American Art.

The six-part racial justice series will provide viewers with the basis to understand the current historical moment through a substantive introduction to the history of race and protest against white supremacist violence and legislation. The series will also highlight the societal articulation of white supremacy, race, class, gender, and sexuality. We hope to help correct the mistaken history in most Americans' minds, and also the historical erasure of the women and LGBTQ folks who were so central to every part of the struggles we will study.
Without a historical appreciation of what African Americans have endured and survived, we as Sikh Americans cannot be good allies. We cannot be legitimate participants in the discussion regarding race now being undertaken in this country. If we do not know what has happened in the past, we cannot learn from the lessons of history, nor benefit from the mistakes of those who fought for justice in the past.
