The Rightful Owner is a tale of a Sikh soldier, Nihal Singh, and his British senior, Mark Smith, both of whom served in the Army of the British Raj.

The two become good friends. Through the eyes of a non-Sikh, Sikh culture, values and way of life are shown.

Nihal is the epitome of bravery, courage, sacrifice and selflessness. The two friends fight shoulder to shoulder in the Second World War.

For his bravery, Mark Smith gets a medal and that of Nihal Singh goes unrecognized.

The author introduces another character, Bhagat ji, a philanthropist who loves humanity without any distinction.

Two generations down the line, the descendants of Nihal Singh and Mark Smith try to learn more about them with the help of an old diary and some coins. They also have to search for the for The Rightful Owner. Wilbur Smith’s journey, which starts from modern-day London, takes him to Chandigarh, Punjab.

To sum up, The Rightful Owner is a saga of sacrifice, selfless love, greed and patriotism. It has in it the elements of mystery, suspense and drama.

The author is a 39-year-old banker living in Chandigarh, Punjab. This is his first book.
